RALEIGH, N.C.,None — The North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded two contracts worth $10.2 million to Blythe Development Co. of Charlotte for improvements to 34.2 miles of roads in Mecklenburg County, according to a release from the DOT.
A $6.1 million contract was awarded for milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction work on eight roads over 20.2 miles, including:
• 4.8 miles of W.T. Harris Boulevard (N.C. 24) from I-77 to Mallard Creek Road; • 2.7 miles of eastbound Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) from the bridge east of Village Lake to just before Sam Newell Road, and from just over Sam Newell Road to Old N.C. 51; • 4.1 miles of westbound Independence Boulevard from Old N.C. 51 to W.T. Harris Boulevard; • 2.3 miles of N.C. 27 (Freedom Drive) from Little Rock Road to Mt. Holly Road; • 1.4 miles of N.C. 24/27 (Albemarle Road) from the Cabarrus County line to east of N.C. 51 (Blair Road); • 0.3 miles of westbound N.C. 24/27 from Wilgrove-Mint Hill Road to just west of that intersection; • 0.9 miles of N.C. 49 (University City Boulevard) from W.T. Harris Boulevard to John Kirk Drive; • 0.4 miles of U.S. 29 (North Tryon Street) from W.T. Harris Boulevard to McCullough drive; • 1.6 miles of N.C. 115 (Old Statesville Road) from David Cox Road to I-485; and • 1.7 miles of U.S. 21 (Statesville Road) from N.C. 115 to Lakeview Road.
According to the NCDOT statement, work could start as early as May 31 and is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

The other contract with Blythe Development is worth $4.1 million for resurfacing, shoulder reconstruction and lane widening, and covers 14 miles on 13 different roads. They include 1.3 miles of Steele Creek Road from Byrum Road to Shopton Road, intersections on Billy Graham Parkway with Mullberry Church Road, Boyer Street, Morris Field Drive and Tyvola Road, as well 12.3 miles over 11 secondary roads.
This project also has a start date as early as May 31, and is scheduled to be finished by Sept. 30, the release stated.
These contracts were two of 15 totaling $88.6 million awarded by Secretary Conti this month for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina, the NCDOT said.
The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law and came in at 3.9 percent, or about $3.6 million, below NCDOT estimates, the agency said.
