The Murphy USA on N.C. 150 East had just opened when the robbery happened, Lt. Mike Allred with Cherryville Police told Channel 9's newspaper partner, the Gaston Gazette.
A white man wearing a ball cap and sunglasses approached the counter at about 4:50 a.m. and demanded money from the clerk, police said.

The man is in his early 20s and was wearing blue jeans, a tan work jacket and sneakers, Allred said. He left the area in a white, early 1990s model Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.
