HICKORY, N.C.,None — The U.S. Postal Service is looking into closing its distribution center in Hickory to help deal with its billion-dollar loss over the past two years.
On Tuesday night, employees had the chance to fight back. Nearly 150 people showed up.
Kelly Heavner said her family's future is uncertain. She and her husband have worked at the Hickory distribution center for 21 years.
"I'm not sure what we're going to do," Heavner said.
The Postal Service is looking into taking all the work done at the Hickory plant and moving it to the facility in Greensboro.
Employees have mixed emotions.
"One day I say I'll go if they offer a job and some days I say no. There's a lot of people who said they're not leaving this area," said Douglas Woodard.
The Postal Service said all employees will be offered a job. Many think it will be an offer in Greensboro.
Woodard also thinks mail service will suffer if the center closes.
"If you mail a letter from Lenoir to Lenoir, it's going from Lenoir to Greensboro, back from Greensboro to Lenoir," Woodard said.
The Postal Service will take public comment on the proposal until June 1.
A final decision is expected by August.
