Samaritan's Purse sending 100 tons of supplies to fight Ebola

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crews with Samaritan’s Purse were loading 100 tons of supplies Wednesday morning to send to West Africa to help battle the Ebola outbreak.

The Christian relief agency was loading a 747 at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with medical supplies and protective equipment.

The cargo jet is set to leave Charlotte for Liberia around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

They are sending rubber gloves, rain coats and canisters to spray disinfectants.
       
The supplies are paid for by Samaritan's Purse and were loaded onto the plane that will head to Liberia.    
 
A Liberian ambassador said this plane represents hope. The country is battling Ebola, but has very few doctors or hospitals.

 Often family members are left to care for infected. These items will help them stay safe.
 
"This is a drop in the bucket.  Much more is needed. Samaritans Purse is committed to do all that we can," said the Rev. Franklin Graham with Samaritan's Purse.  
 
Doctors from Samaritan's Purse contracted Ebola at clinics in Liberia.
 
Coming up on Eyewitness News at 5 p.m., reporter Ken Lemon spoke with doctors and nurses from those clinics as they speak on the efforts there and why they are not surprised to hear of the first confirmed case of Ebola in America.
