SC Children's Train Wreck Conductor Blames Mechanical Error

SPARTANBURG, S.C.,None — The driver of a miniature train blamed for a crash that killed 6-year-old Benji Easler now says it was a mechanical error and not the speed of the train that caused the crash.

The driver initially told police Sunday he was driving the train too fast, but on Wednesday at a news conference, he announced he was in shock when he said that and wasn't speeding.

He said he was unprepared for the media attention he's received since the wreck Saturday at Spartanburg's Cleveland Park.

Investigators still haven't determined what caused the crash that claimed the life of Easler and injured 27 other passengers.

A lawmaker who represents the area where that train crash happened wants victims to be able to get more money for medical bills.

State law caps money victims can recover for medical bills to $600,000.

Dennis Moss, a representative from Gaffney, said "that's too low" and he wants to look into changing it so they could collect more.

On Wednesday, one of the families injured in the crash filed a lawsuit, accusing state and county officials of negligence.
