COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Columbia zoo is closing its tadpole wading pond because children and adults were ignoring the rules and letting kids swim in the water.
The State newspaper reports the swimmers caused the bacteria levels in the shallow water to increase to dangerous levels.
Riverbanks Zoo CEO Satch Krantz says the zoo built the tadpole pond to allow children to stand on the rocks or wade in the water and interact directly with nature.
The tadpole pond opened in early April.
Krantz says the zoo has gotten rid of the tadpoles and will rebuild the area as a splash pad, which will be run like a swimming pool with disinfected, circulated water.
