Greg Alyn Carlson, 47, was fatally shot in his room at the Woodsprings Suites in Apex, located several miles west of Raleigh, FBI Special Agent John M. Strong said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

Carlson was wanted in connection with an assault on July 13, 2017, in Los Angeles, The New York Times reported. He was charged on Sept. 3, 2017, with burglary, assault with intent to commit rape and assault with a deadly weapon, but fled to South Carolina after posting bail, the News & Observer reported.

His death ends a search that spanned four states, including Alabama and Florida.

Earlier Wednesday, an Apex police officer spotted a "suspicious vehicle" with South Carolina plates, the News & Observer reported. The officer notified his superiors and the FBI, leading to the deadly confrontation, the newspaper reported.

“What happened here today is not what we want to happen,” Strong said at the news conference. “We want to capture the individual, give them their day court and bring them to justice. What happened today is unfortunate. ... We feel fortunate that no one else was injured.”

According to The Associated Press, Carlson was spotted in Hoover, Alabama, on Nov. 22, 2018, and evaded police after a high-speed chase. He was spotted in Jacksonville, Florida, on Nov. 28 and in Daytona Beach two days later.
