According to the Kansas City Police Department, the driver of a rollback tow truck was attempting to transport a disabled maroon Kia Sorento at about 12:13 a.m. CDT on Saturday, KSHB-TV reported.

The tow truck was in the left-turn lane and began making a U-turn to get into position to tow the Kia when it was struck by a black Dodge Avenger that failed to stop at a red stoplight, the television station reported.

Police said the driver of the Dodge was traveling at “a high rate of speed” and attempted to weave between the tow truck and a Cadillac Seville that was stopped at the red light, WDAF-TV reported.

The Dodge struck the Cadillac, the tow truck, the Kia, and a gold Pontiac Transport van that was parked behind the Kia, KSHB reported. The van was occupied by the sister of the Kia driver and she was at the scene attempting to help her brother, according to the television station.

Police said the Dodge came to a stop “quite a distance” west from where the collision occurred, WDAF reported.

Authorities said the driver of the Cadillac died at the scene, according to the television station.

Five people inside the Dodge were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered to be life-threatening, KSHB reported.

The drivers of the tow truck, Kia and Pontiac, and the passengers of the Pontiac were not injured, police said.
