Tobias “Toby” Jacob Brewer, 17, of Cocoa, was arrested Nov. 30 and charged with attempted first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy to commit a capital felony, fleeing with disregard of safety to persons and grand theft of a motor vehicle, according to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Officers were called to a residence in Cocoa at about 2:30 a.m. EST and found Brewer’s mother lying on the laundry room in her home, according to an arrest affidavit filed by Cocoa Police Department Officer Oscar Pimenta. The woman was covered in stab wounds and she suffered severe injuries to her nose, WPEC-TV reported.

A small, black folding knife and a frying pan with a broken handle were found nearby, according to the arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, while police were contacting paramedics, the woman took a breath and said that “Toby did this.” She was taken to an area hospital in critical but stable condition, according to WPEC.

According to the arrest affidavit, Brewer allegedly took his mother’s keys and money and fled the home with his two friends and girlfriend in the victim’s black 2022 Kia Rio.

Authorities located the vehicle in Volusia County north of Cocoa and deputies attempted to make a traffic stop, WPEC reported. The vehicle returned to Brevard County and exited in Scottsmoor and headed toward U.S. 1, according to the arrest affidavit.

The vehicle eventually crashed into a wooded area, and the suspect and the other occupants of the car were detained, the affidavit states.

After being read his rights, Brewer allegedly told deputies that he had struck the victim with the frying pan until the handle broke. He then used the knife to stab her “repeatedly.”

Brewer allegedly told deputies that he was upset because his mother “was constantly on his case” about cleaning his room, according to the affidavit.

“He explained that he does not like cleaning his room and was tired of the victim constantly harping about it,” the affidavit stated.

According to the Brevard County Clerk’s Office, Brewer’s case was transferred to adult court, WPEC reported.
