PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are investigating an automobile crash in Michigan that killed an 8-year-old boy Friday.
A 4-year-old boy was seriously injured and the driver, a 28-year-old Pennfield Township woman who is the mother of the children, was also hurt in the single-vehicle crash, WOOD-TV reported.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames shortly before 6 p.m. EDT in Pennfield Township, located northeast of Battle Creek, MLive.com reported.

Deputies arriving at the scene found the vehicle engulfed in flames, the website reported.
Deputies believe alcohol and excessive speed may have been factors that contributed to the crash, according to WOOD.
Nearby residents were able to pull the driver and four children from the vehicle, MLive.com reported.
Deputies and first responders attempted lifesaving measures on the 8-year-old boy, but he died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. The 4-year-old who was injured is expected to recover, WOOD reported.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
