WINTER PARK, Fla. — A guest at a wedding in Winter Park, Florida, was shot and killed by police during the Saturday night reception after he fought with officers, knocking one of them unconscious, WFTV reported.
The Winter Park Police Department identified the victim on Sunday as 39-year-old Daniel Patrick Knight. The department also confirmed to WFTV that both officers involved in the altercation have been released from an area hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, officers responded to the reception after receiving a report of a man attacking fellow guests, WFLA reported.
Lt. Lisa Suepat, of the Winter Park Police Department, told WFTV that the disturbance was reported at the Winter Park Library & Events Center at about 9:30 p.m.
“It appeared he was going up to several people inside the party where he was battering people. It started inside the events center and ended up outside,” Suepat said.
According to police, the first officer approached Knight, prompting an immediate altercation that left the officer “unconscious and incapacitated, WFTV reported.
According to police, the second officer said that he tried to talk to the man as well, but Knight remained “aggressive,” necessitating the shooting, the TV station reported.
“We had an officer on the ground. The suspect was approached. There was a second physical altercation with the officer, and then there was a shooting,” Suepat said.
Knight was transported to an area hospital, where he died, WFLA reported.
Per department policy, the second officer is now on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, WFTV reported.
