The Tony Award winner wrote, produced and performed the song that tells the story of a young boy wanting a puppy as one of his Hanukkah gifts.

Diggs’ mother is Jewish and he said he grew up identifying as Jewish but also embraced his father’s Black heritage in a 2015 interview with Broadway.com, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Diggs worked with William Hutson and Jonathon Snipes, who are members of his rap group Clipping, to come up with the lyrics.

“Daveed, William and Jonathan created a Hanukkah song for the ages that’s inventive, humorous and relevant as it celebrates the Miracle of Lights, the diverse world we live in, and the universal joy when a family adopts a pet into a child’s life,” Steven Vincent, vice president, Music and Soundtracks, Disney Branded Television, said in a news release.

One of the lyrics says:

Okay first night an’ I’m feeling right

Momma came with a gift wrapped box

It don’t bark don’t bite don’t cry when I shake it so I’m pretty sure that it’s just socks

And of course when the box is opened it is socks. But eventually the child gets his beloved puppy, named Monica, which Diggs raps:

(Nah probably not that’s a weird name for a dog)

But it rhymes with Hanukkah

I got my Hanukkah puppy

During the song, Diggs raps a Hebrew blessing, saying that the blessing is a bop and that he’s “Not sure what it means but I learned in phonetic.”

The song is on rotation on the Disney Channel and in Disney Stores nationwide, CNN reported.
