CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a man near Johnson C. Smith University in west Charlotte.
Dozens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers responded to the West Downs Apartments on Mattoon Street, off Beatties Ford Road, at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. They found 23-year-old Jermaine Marque McJunkin lying on the ground with a gunshot wound and said he died at the scene.

A crowd of people looked on as investigators gathered evidence. Detectives took several witnesses to police headquarters uptown to get statements.
Officers told Channel 9 the shooting does not appear to be a random act, but didn't provide further details.
The shooting marks Charlotte's fifth homicide in five days.

On May 16, 20-year-old Devon Alister Clement was shot and killed just after 4 a.m. in the parking lot of the Cook-Out on West Sugar Creek Road.
Around 7 p.m. May 16, 29-year-old Michael Pernell Smith was shot on Camrose Drive, off The Plaza and Eastway Drive. Smith died the next day.
Dominique McGriff, 21, and Tia Mitchell, 23, were shot and killed just after 11 p.m. May 16. Their bodies were found in a car on Morning Drive, off West Boulevard.
