Woman says imposter tried to get inside her home

YORK COUNTY, S.C.,None — A local woman said a man wearing an ID badge came to her door and claimed to be with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, was too afraid to go to police. But she did tell her neighbors in the Cottage Creek Community near Lake Wylie what happened, and they were surprised.

“It's a little bit alarming, of course,” Aaron Skogsberg said.

Her home seems to be the only one in the area that the man went to on Monday. He said he needed to come inside so he could inspect her home room by room, but the woman refused to let him in.

The next day, she told neighbor Steve Kennedy, a retired Air Force security officer.

“The minute she told me, I knew that wasn't normal,” Kennedy said.

He called HUD, and officials told him they don't go door to door or do home inspections, and that the man in question doesn't work for them.

Kennedy thinks the man was trying to get her alone inside the house.

“It really makes you uncomfortable, knowing that could happen,” Kennedy said.

The woman said she’s glad she didn't let the stranger in, and said she is more cautious now when the doorbell rings.
