Geminid meteor shower dimmed by bright moon, cloud cover

CHARLOTTE, N.C — This year’s Geminid meteor shower, typically one of the best of the year, may be a disappointment for many across the Carolinas.

The peak of the shower is expected to arrive around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The one issue will be the overpowering of the full supermoon, which will brighten the sky. Usually the Geminid shower produces over 100 meteors per hour, but moonlight will decrease that number down to 40 per hour.

Mother Nature is not offering any assistance, as clouds will also linger across the Carolina sky.

If you still want to take a chance at the nighttime show, no special equipment will be needed. It is always best to stay away from the city lights and look in all directions.
