CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — College student Taylor Martin is headed overseas for a 21-day vacation. She was smart to notify her bank she will be using her credit card as she travels to London, Paris and beyond.
"We called many times to make sure they knew I was going," she said.
If you're traveling and didn't notify your bank, and they see a purchase from Spain, they typically will call you to verify that the charges are not fraud.
"If you miss the call, your credit card could be frozen while on vacation. Avoud the hassle by notifying your bank before you leave home.
Something else cash savvy vacationers should be aware of are extra fees when booking trips online for such things as checked bags, meals and even blankets.
Marie Mosley of Mann Travels says those online low fare deals could end up costing you extra.
"You have to be careful when you book online. You don't always get what you think you're getting," she said.
Also, any time you have booked an expensive cruise or vacation rental, experts say to buy trip insurance in case you have to cancel.
"You really need to protect your investment," Mosley said.
Something else travelers certainly don't want to do is to go on Facebook and announce your upcoming vacation. If you feel you must post, be very vague.
Never post the exact dates you'll be gone. It's like issuing an open invitation to thieves to hit your home.
