CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Mystery surrounds the man who police said killed his wife and two of her children, and then committed suicide two weeks later.
According to police, Kenneth Chapman killed his wife, 34-year-old Nateesha Ward Chapman, on March 14 and left her body in an apartment that the family was in the process of moving out of on Via Romano Drive.
Then, police said, Chapman killed 1-year-old Nakyiah Jael Chapman and 13-year-old Na'Jhae Parker on March 15 and left their bodies in the family's new apartment in southeast Charlotte.
Nakyiah was Kenneth Chapman's daughter. Na'Jhae Parker was not related to him.
On Monday, when police showed up at the family's new apartment because Nateesha's uncle asked them to check on her welfare, officers said Chapman fatally shot himself.
It was then that police made the gruesome discoveries, nearly two weeks after they say the murders occurred.
Eyewitness News checked Chapman's Facebook page in an attempt to learn more about his past. On it, there were messages that now seem chilling.
On March 19, a few days after police said the killings occurred, Chapman wrote: "2 my facebook family chap will no longer be here."
A friend saw that posting and called 911 because he thought Chapman might be suicidal.
Investigators said an officer went to the apartment on Via Romano Drive twice on March 19 to check on Chapman, but no one answered the door.
On Sunday, Chapman posted light-hearted messages, including one that said he was going clubbing. On Monday, he changed his relationship status to not married.
Neighbor Johnny Farfan said he's floored by the crimes and doesn't know how to explain them to his daughter.
"She can't believe this, this happens," he said. "You know, ‘Daddy, what's going on? Why he kill his own kids?'"
Police said Chapman's two other children with Nateesha, a 10-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy, lived with him in the southeast Charlotte apartment after the killings. The bodies of their two siblings were in the apartment for the two-week period before Chapman killed himself and the crimes were discovered, police said.
