Hurricane Dorian: Impaired man drove truck into ocean in Kill Devil Hills

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — As Hurricane Dorian battered the North Carolina coast, Kill Devil Hills emergency crews were called to rescue an impaired man who drove his truck into the ocean Friday afternoon, according to WTVD.

Crews received a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. about a white pickup truck that had gone into the ocean at Arch Street in Kill Devil Hills.

Police said the passenger was able to get out of the truck on their own, but the driver was still stuck.

When first responders got to the beach, they were able to help get the driver out of the pickup truck safely.

Officials said the driver, 41-year-old Troy Topash, was impaired and arrested by Kill Devil Hills police.

Ocean rescue crews were able to secure the truck before it was swept out to sea, and it was eventually towed away.

Police said the town's curfew was still in effect when the incident happened.

They said the area was still feeling the impacts of Dorian such as high winds, driving rain and dangerous ocean conditions.
