Indian Trail To Fund Unusual Project

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C.,None — Town leaders in Indian Trail are looking for ways to fund $250,000 worth of road improvements necessary to build a movie theater complex.

The 14-screen megaplex is proposed for the Sun Valley Commons area at the corner of Old Monroe Road and Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road.

NCDOT has said those roads need an estimated $250,000 in repairs before the theater can be built. However, council members said that burden will be passed on to the town, not the developer.

The town council called a special meeting Monday to discuss economic incentives for the developer, but after Eyewitness News cameras showed up, council members moved to change the agenda and discuss the funding behind closed doors.

After the session ended, Eyewitness News asked the town manager if taxpayers will have to pay for all of the road improvements.

Manager Joe Fivas would only say that council members were looking into various sources of funding and that more would be revealed at Tuesday night's council meeting.

Taxpayer and former town council member Don Helms said it was highly unusual not to ask the theater developer to chip in on at least part of the road improvements, but he added it was still a good investment of taxpayer money.

"It is OK, really, because that's not really that expensive. It is needed for business development here," Helms said.
