Know the rules if you buy utility's protection plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Your utility probably offers protection plans.

It may make sense for your family to sign up for one of those plans, but if you do, make sure you follow the rules so the company picks up the tab.

Roland Thomas said some of the lights in his Ballantyne house used to flicker. He and his wife worried a safety issue may be lurking.

"We were just very concerned about fire," Thomas said.

Thomas didn't waste time. He called electricians and they came over, but the bill was roughly $600.

Thomas had one of Duke Energy's home protection plans for $4.99 per month.

His plan covers wiring, but he didn't realize one of the rules meant that he had to use an electrician provided by Duke Energy instead of lining up his own.

"In order for them to take care of it, we had to use their electrician. Well, we didn't know that," Thomas said.

Normally, he would have been out of the money, but Duke Energy paid the full bill as a goodwill gesture.

"I feel good," Thomas said.

It's a good lesson for others. If you go with a home protection plan, know the rules so you get all the coverage for which you pay.
