IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies in Iredell County were trying to serve multiple felony warrants, including kidnapping, on someone Friday afternoon at a home when he pointed a semi-automatic rifle at them, the sheriff said.
A deputy then shot and killed the armed man who was hidden in a crawl space at the home off Bell Farm Road, east of Statesville.
Sheriff Darren Campbell said that there was only room for one deputy to check it out.
“One deputy was able to get access,” Campbell said. “The subject pulled up a rifle, a semi-automatic rifle. The deputy fired and killed our suspect.”
The suspect had the following warrants out against him: Felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony violent habitual felon, and felony second-degree kidnapping.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Gregory Cribb.
The sheriff said the deputies were serving felony warrants out of Hickory.
The home was a rental and housed a few other people, Campbell said.
Three people inside the home were charged with misdemeanor harboring a fugitive. They were identified as Heather Lynn Hopkins, David Allen Metz, Jr., and Christy Arnold Fayne.
No deputies were hurt in the shooting, according to the sheriff. The deputy who shot the suspect is on administrative leave.
Per standard procedure, the State Bureau of Investigation is helping as the investigation unfolds.
“You hate it for anybody,” Campbell said. “You sympathize with anybody that loses their life. The deputies came out OK. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
