15-year-old boy killed in drive-by shooting in Chester, police say

CHARLOTTE — A 15-year-old boy was killed in a drive-by shooting that appeared to be gang-related early Saturday morning, Chester police said.

“The majority of the shots fired calls and other shootings we’ve had in the Chester County area has pretty much all been gang-related,” Chester Police Lt. Jason Newton said.

According to a Chester County sheriff’s report, deputies went to the intersection of Loomis Street and Oak Street just after 1:30 a.m. for a shooting.

A gunman in a car opened fire into a crowd of people who gathered for a party, authorities said. The sheriff’s office believes the groups involved are in neighborhood gangs.

Police found the teen, Lataurus Grey, on the ground bleeding.

In the report, deputies said they were trying to control the bleeding when a crowd started gathering around him.

“It was a hysterical scene,” Newton said. “The 15-year-old was laying on the ground shot. The victims keep getting younger and younger.”

EMS took him to the hospital, but Chester police told Channel 9 the teen died from his injuries.

Police said they have not made any arrests. Witnesses have not provided authorities with any information.

“We can’t do our jobs without the public’s assistance,” Newton said. We’re not mind-readers. We’re not psychics. Without the public assisting us, we’re dead in the water out here. We’re useless.”

Teresa Miles lives yards away from a memorial made for the victim. She hopes that people with information will come forward.

“I feel like somebody needs to do something about it,” Miles said. “It’s right around our doors and you don’t know what family member might get hurt by this stuff going on. Your mother or anybody can get hurt.”
