MATTHEWS, N.C. — A 7-year-old girl died in a car crash Friday night in Matthews.
The wreck happened around 10:56 p.m. on Sam Newell Road in front of Crown Point Elementary School.
The driver of the car, a 54-year-old man, was taken to the hospital, along with three children.
One 7-year-old died at the hospital and another 7-year-old girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.
A 1-year-old boy and the driver were treated and released.
Police said that when they arrived, they found the car had veered off the road and crashed into a tree.
Investigators are trying to determine if speed contributed to the crash.
