CLEMSON, S.C. — Three fraternities at Clemson University in South Carolina were placed on disciplinary probation for violating the university’s code of conduct, according to a university report.
The university said it investigated them for harsh new member initiations. The school’s report lists misconduct investigations involving alcohol, drugs, sexual assault, physical assaults and hazing.
Delta Chi is accused of forcing members into personal servitude and will be on probation until Dec. 31, 2021.
Phi Delta Theta and Chi Phi are on probation, accused of forcing new members to drink. Both fraternities are on probation until May 31, 2020.
Chris Miller, Clemson’s dean of students and interim vice president for student affairs, said if the chapters fail to complete the sanctions further punishment could be applied. He added that Clemson’s student affairs office will ensure the organizations comply with the sanctions.
In addition to Clemson University, nearly a dozen fraternities at the University of South Carolina received violations during the fall semester. Some of them got more than one.
According to The State newspaper, they were mainly for hazing, alcohol and noise violations.
Overall, the university recorded 15 violations, which is more than double the amount from the previous fall semester.
