Authorities identify man shot, killed during 8-hour standoff in Ashe County

WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. — An 8-hour standoff between law enforcement and a man in a camper ended with an officer shooting and killing the suspect early Thursday in Ashe County, according to the sheriff.

The suspect was identified as Vance McCall.

The standoff along U.S. 221 in West Jefferson started early Wednesday night and lasted until roughly 3:15 a.m.

A section of U.S. 221 stretching from Water Tank Road to Vernon Roten Road had been closed due to the standoff but reopened shortly after it ended.

Sheriff Phil Howell said in a Facebook post that deputies responded to a welfare check at the camper where the suspect lived. McCall then shot at authorities when they arrived. The sheriff said multiple calls from McCall indicated he wanted to hurt law enforcement officers.

Deputies said through the course of the hours-long standoff, they were shot at 10 times. No officers were hurt.

“My husband called, and he said there’s something going on, I probably needed to get down and stay away from the windows. And at that time, I did and got to a safe area of the house,” neighbor Rebecca Miller said.

Much of the activity was focused on a camper behind a building owned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The NCDOT said the contractor for the $65 million Highway 221 project was using the building.

The contractor said McCall did work on the road widening project.

The SBI has been called to investigate and the deputy is on paid administrative leave. No other information has been released.
