American Airlines to shrink legroom for passengers on flights

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines plans to put certain seats closer together.

Now, the back of one seat to another is 31 inches apart.

In some cases, they're going down to 30 and even 29 inches, according to reports.

American Airlines is adding seats to its 737 Max jetliners, and to accommodate that, the airline plans to shrink the space between seats in economy class.

"You know what (legroom is currently) like, nonexistent," traveler Joe Papovich.

Papovich is 6 feet 5 inches tall, while his wife is 5 foot 10 inches.

"Question is, 'Am I willing to pay for first class or something like that?' And we're not, so we just suffer," he said.

Most rows will lose one inch of legroom, three rows will lose two inches.

That is a tighter squeeze than on Delta, Southwest or United, according to reports.

"It does make a difference, but I can't get to New York in two hours driving a car, so you just have to put up with it," traveler John Narang said.

Prices would stay the same.

Channel 9 is waiting to hear back from American Airlines.
