Audit says Charlotte needs new process for some contracts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An audit said policy violations occurred frequently and the city of Charlotte needs a new process for contracts under $100,000.

The city auditor's office looked at service contracts under $100,000 in the 2015 and 2016 fiscal years, and found some departments could not supply documents to support that they followed the city's solicitation requirements.

It also said that several departments did not follow basic contract administrative steps to ensure contract expectations were met and that rates charged were accurate.

This comes as the city considers changes to its contract threshold.

The city is considering raising the minimum amount for council approval to $250,000 or $500,000.

The auditor's report said the city needs a new process to ensure contract solicitations are compliant with policy before being approved by the city manager.
