Bomb squad investigation over at China Grove Macy’s Distribution Center

CHINA GROVE, N.C. — Emergency responders investigated a reported bomb threat at the Macy’s Distribution Center in China Grove, officials with Rowan County Emergency Services said on Wednesday morning.

Carson High School was closed out of an abundance of caution despite it being the first day of school, district officials said. The campus is closed for all students and staff, including after-school activities.

“We know today is supposed to be an exciting start to a new school year,” the district said in a message to families. “We are disappointed that we will not get to see you today, but we look forward to starting fresh tomorrow morning. Thank you and have a good last day of summer!”

Regional bomb squads and explosive detection K-9 teams were at the facility.

The incident is considered concluded, officials said at 9:45 a.m. There is no ongoing threat to the community. No further protective actions are needed.

Public safety officials distributed emergency notification messages to residents, businesses and facilities within a half-mile radius of the distribution center as a precaution. That is no longer in effect. No evacuation order was issued.

“We sincerely appreciate the patience and cooperation of our community throughout this extended response,” emergency officials said. “We also thank the numerous local and regional public safety agencies that provided personnel, specialized resources, and support throughout the investigation.”

Multiple regional agencies provided specialized assistance on scene, including bomb squads and explosive detection K-9 teams from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Guilford County, Piedmont Triad, Cabarrus County and Rowan County.

Macy’s, Inc. spokesperson’s statement before the incident concluded:

“The safety and security of our colleagues is our top priority. We are coordinating closely with local authorities following a reported threat at our China Grove facility. Out of an abundance of caution, the facility was swiftly evacuated, and all colleagues were directed to a safe location. This remains an active investigation, and we defer further questions to local law enforcement.”
