Charlotte man sentenced to 16 years for killing ex-girlfriend

CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte man will spend at least 16 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend in what prosecutors described as a murder fueled by jealousy and suspicion.

Immanuel Felton, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Thursday, 10 months after he shot and killed Alexia Mayfield, 24, in an apartment on Nobles Avenue.

The prosecutor said Felton had been convinced that Mayfield was seeing another man and that he had convinced himself there was someone hiding in the closet of the apartment when he killed her.

Felton’s attorney said he had been on a seven-day drug binge before the murder where he had gotten almost no sleep, and that he was very remorseful when he gave a confession to police.

After the hearing, Mayfield’s family said there is no amount of time that would be enough.

"If it was possible for me to have my daughter back and he walk free, I would accept that," Joseph Mayfield said.

He said that he hopes Felton will have a chance to change his life during his time in prison and that he is trying to forgive Felton.

Nichelle Mayfield, Alexia Mayfield's aunt, said they have to leave anger behind.

"You have to sort of be at peace because the anger is what will really eat you up, and the anger isn't going to bring her back," Nichelle Mayfield said.
