CMPD: Mother shot, 6-month-old inside apartment during home invasion

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 6-month old baby was inside a University City apartment when a man burst in and shot a woman inside, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Officers were called around 9:30 a.m. to the Wexford Apartments, on Wexford Meadows Lane and just off University City Boulevard, and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

Eyewitness News reporter Glenn Counts learned that the woman was shot multiple times in the upper body and her 6-month-old baby was inside the apartment at the time.

The mother was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but officers said she was conscious before she was transported and after she arrived at the hospital.

The baby was not hurt. A cousin is taking care of the child while the victim is at the hospital.

"It's just God's grace that the bullet didn't even touch the kid," neighbor Joan Sojo said.

Detectives believe a man forced his way into the apartment and was looking a person who was in the apartment at the time. They said the man opened fire, striking the young mother multiple times. Officers said the woman was adamant that she didn't know the shooter.

It's not clear if the person the gunman was looking for lives at the apartment or nearby.

Counts also learned one of the bullets went into an apartment next door, but thankfully no one inside it was hurt.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
