CMS asks new employees from last school year to get fingerprinted

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District is asking new employees or rehires who went through a new background check process in the 2018-19 school year to get fingerprinted.

Channel 9 first reported that when CMS hired a new background check contractor last summer, the contractor brought deeper screening procedures but stopped fingerprinting for nearly a year.

According to CMS board policy, a criminal records check is required for all applicants who accept a job with the district, and, "In order to conduct an accurate check of criminal records, all applicants for employment will be required to submit to fingerprinting, and any current employee may be required to submit to fingerprinting."

Channel 9 learned the fingerprinting controversy was a factor in the suspension of Dr. Clayton Wilcox as superintendent. The school board ultimately announced his resignation effective Aug. 2.

Channel 9 learned 3,290 employees didn’t get fingerprinted. So far, 1,193 of them have had their fingerprints checked. That still leaves 2,097 employees who must be checked.

The district is now asking those employees to go to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office to get fingerprinted. They can fill out the appropriate forms and schedule an appointment by visiting this website.

CMS opens its doors to students in four weeks.
