CHARLOTTE — New details are emerging three days after a Charlotte woman was fatally shot during an altercation outside a home in east Charlotte.
Jasmin Flores, 22, died after she was shot on Darbrook Drive Friday night. The shooter has not yet been charged.
Flores’s family told Channel 9 Monday and sources later confirmed that a fight at a local middle school earlier in the day prompted the altercation on Darbrook Drive. Family said Flores wasn’t involved in the fight at the school. A police report said a 27-year-old woman was assaulted by a student at Eastway Middle School at about 2:45 p.m. Friday. No names were released in the report.
The Flores family said Flores went to Darbrook Drive with her friend’s family so that the relatives could confront a woman about the fight that happened at the school. They said there was another fight outside the home and that’s when a man opened fire, possibly to break up the altercation.
Channel 9 went back to the scene Monday, but people outside the home didn’t want to comment.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Latonya Garces, who is Flores' cousin. “You don’t want to see your child or anybody die at the hand of a gun. She was just beginning her life. She was just 22 years old. In just two months she was going to move to Atlanta to pursue a career in fashion design.”
Garces said the family wishes Jasmin would have never gone with her friend to the home on Darbrook Drive. They are now left wondering if the man who pulled the trigger will be charged. Officials said charges, if any, would be up to the prosecutor.
“All we want are answers and justice for Jasmin,” said Garces.
A prayer vigil for Flores will be 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall Park.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call police.
