LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies in Lincoln County are reporting a recent dramatic rise in the theft of county road signs.
Authorities said over the Easter weekend, a dozen road signs were stolen in the Reepsville and Highway 182 areas of western Lincoln County.
Officials said each sign costs taxpayers roughly $200 to replace.
Deputies are frustrated because they said street signs are vital when trying to find a home or business during an emergency response.
County road sign thefts cost the county about $25,000 a year, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials told Channel 9 the signs are produced on aluminum and are believed to be stolen for scrap metal or used as decoration.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrests of individuals involved in the theft and possession of county road or street signs. Anyone with information is urged to call 704-736-8909.
