Experts say snake bites in North Carolina have increased

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Snakes are slithering in droves throughout the Carolinas.

Snake wrangler Michael Burt warns people to know your surroundings, especially in areas where those slithery serpents can appear.

Experts say that snakes are most likely to be found in hidden spaces, including in bushes.

There has been a reported increase in snake bites throughout the Carolinas this year.

“You know it’s going to happen,” Burt said. “You don't expect it, but it’s nature."

According to the Carolinas Poison Center, there have been 725 snake bites reported in North Carolina between January and September, which has already surpassed last year’s total of 668.

Burt said he's seen it all during his work with Carolinas Wildlife Management, finding snakes in a variety of spaces.

"You'll get the copperheads sitting by a pool filter or A/C unit,” Burt said. “I've had them in crawl spaces and garages."

Many times, Burt says snakes sneak into small openings into homes just to protect themselves.

"The snake has got to worry about its predators, so if it feels safe next to your home, you're inviting them in,” Burt said.

There are steps you can take to protect yourself, starting with staying aware.

"They're going to hide, and we're not paying attention,” Burt said. “A lot of my bites are from not being cautious first."

If you are bitten by a snake, the best advice is to remain calm and not panic, and also be sure you get a good description of the snake's colors.
