HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina World War II veteran spent his 100th birthday by himself due to the coronavirus pandemic, WLOS reported.

But Carl “Pete” McCarson’s friends and family tried to make his day special while keeping their distance.

They decorated his lawn in Hendersonville and stopped by for socially distant well wishes.

Before the pandemic, McCarson’s main social life was at church. His son says the church still visits him.

“The church comes and they sing outside to him,” said his son Gene McCarson. “They sang Christmas carols, and a few come and they brought all the church family’s birthday cards, and a cake.”

McCarson told WLOS that his faith is helping him through the pandemic.

“In a few years, people will look back that, we done it,” the World War II veteran said. “Thank the Lord to help us through.”

For now, McCarson plans to stay at home.
