Former NASCAR president Humpy Wheeler honored at funeral

CHARLOTTE — Family, friends, and NASCAR fans said their final goodbyes on Tuesday to Humpy Wheeler.

The funeral was at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in south Charlotte.

The former longtime Charlotte Motor Speedway president and general manager died last week at the age of 86.

Bruton Smith owned Charlotte Motor Speedway and hired Wheeler in 1975.

A reception at the Charlotte Motor Speedway followed the funeral.
