FORT MILL, S.C. — Police have charged a woman after they said she was seen driving around her Fort Mill neighborhood Saturday afternoon with her 7-year-old son on the roof of her car.
Tabitha Barrett was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after witnesses called 911, saying she was driving down Makayla Court with her son laying on the roof.
It's unclear how long the boy was on top of his mother's car, but when officers asked Barrett about the situation, they said she denied it even happened
When officers asked her son, they said he told them that he was on the roof and witnesses backed that up.
Brianna Jarman lives across the street from Barrett. She said she's shocked.
"I think that's scary, that's dangerous," she said. "That's ridiculous."
Jarman told Channel 9 she doesn't know the family well, but sees the boy outside by himself a lot.
"There's a few other parents that walk their kids up and down the road, and that's fine, they're out with adults, but he just kinda roams, " she said.
Police said Barrett was unable to focus and answer their questions when they stopped her, but she was not charged with driving under the influence or given a field sobriety test.
The boy is now in the custody of his grandmother.
