CONCORD, N.C. — Rock Hill AME Zion Church has been around since 1880, but it could soon have to shut its doors for good.
Lifelong member Lisa Grier Lea told Channel 9 Tuesday that the church is in the process of being foreclosed on by their bank, American First Federal Mortgage Co. It needs $1,465,000 to stop the foreclosure.
“To have to come publicly and say we can’t stay here can be shameful, it can be intimidating,” Lea said. “We know God is a miracle worker and in this season, in particular, people are a little kinder a little nicer to each other. We are hoping someone can extend some of that kindness and donations to us.”
Lea said the congregation landed in a bad financial position under old leadership in 2006, and since then, it’s been a long and sordid ordeal. The bank will not refinance their loan.
“We have faith and we have hope and really, there’s nothing else that we need, but in the natural, we do need donations,” Lea said.
To donate, call Lea at 704-782-9625.
