CHARLOTTE, N.C. — When it comes to professional sports, the payouts are huge. So what’s a player to do with all that green? Invest it, of course.
For instance, when Stephen Curry renewed his contract in July 2017, the Golden State Warriors’ superstar signed on for $201 million over five years — raking in about $34 million for just the 2017-18 season and elevating him to the highest-paid player in the National Basketball Association, according to CNBC. Curry, a Charlotte-area native, has reportedly invested in companies like Pinterest and Brandless and helped to launch Slyce Inc., an image recognition company that helps brands track and manage social-media endorsements.
From franchises to athletic-wear endorsements, there is no limit to the creative choices that players across the varied landscape of sports have made — from Serena Williams’ eponymous clothing line to Shaquille O’Neal’s love of Five Guys’ bacon burger and fries.
