Incentives approved for big Sonic Automotive project in Gaston County

Sonic Automotive's first EchoPark used-car franchise in Charlotte opened recently off Independence Boulevard. Now, the company is said to be considering a call center for a site in Gaston County that had been slated for another dealership.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A planned office project thought to be a call center for Sonic Automotive Inc. inched a step closer to being realized this week as commissioners in Gaston County signed off on incentives for the operation.

The Gaston Gazette reports the county agreed to provide 10 years worth of tax breaks that decline in value over time, but no specific dollar figure is provided in that article. Project Phoenix, as it is being called by economic development officials, promises an investment of $11 million and hiring for at least 275 jobs, paying significantly more than the county’s average annual salary, in its first three years.

Sonic, one of the nation’s largest automotive-dealer groups, has already purchased the roughly 8-acre site, which had initially been targeted for an EchoPark used-car dealership.

As previously reported by CBJ, EchoPark’s first dealership in the region recently opened off Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte.
