UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The town of Indian Trail has approved funding for the next steps in its downtown master plan, introducing major street projects along Indian Trail Road.
The initiative aims to construct a central downtown district for the Union County community, which has welcomed close to 29,000 new residents over the last six years.
The downtown projects are funded through the town’s five-year capital improvement plan.
Planned infrastructure changes include improvements to the intersection of Indian Trail and Matthews-Indian Trail roads.
The plan also incorporates a new roundabout further down Indian Trail Road, where new housing and plans for commercial businesses in a town center are underway.
Todd Huntsinger, director of engineering for Indian Trail, identified the project site as pivotal to the municipality’s core structure.
“This is our core downtown area,” Huntsinger said. In addition to road design adjustments, funding was also allocated for a water project serving the location.
Town Manager Adam McLamb said the municipal vision focuses heavily on pedestrian access and attracting commercial activity.
“We’ll have 10-foot-wide sidewalks, walkability, and that’s what that vision talks about for the downtown plan. Having shops, places to eat, places to get coffee or meet a friend or do things; have little parks set up different things like that,” McLamb said.
Town leaders hope the street upgrades serve as a catalyst for future development.
Construction on the street project is expected to start in 2025. The project has a target completion date of 2029.
Kathy Leveque, who owns Raw Crunch & Coffee located near the project zone, welcomed the plan to establish a central gathering hub.
“Maybe more businesses will come in, different restaurants, because we’re kind of lacking that. And then if we can get more parking, that would be amazing!” Leveque said.
She noted that developing a town center will offer shared space for residents.
“That’s awesome. I mean, just to put Indian Trail on the map and they having a central location for the community,” Leveque said.
