Iredell Coast ends free food pantry due to rising grocery costs

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Iredell Coast is set to discontinue its free food pantry starting Monday due to rising grocery prices, marking a significant shift in its community support services.

The decision to close the pantry comes as the organization, which is entirely self-funded, struggles to keep up with increasing food costs. Last year, Iredell Coast spent an average of $2,000 a month to stock the pantry, but inflation has made it increasingly difficult to maintain supplies.

“I think that’s the saddest thing. We’re trying to help the folks that need it the most, and now we’re falling on harder times and are unable to provide what we want to provide,” said Joshua McCrary, Executive Director of Iredell Coast.

“Groceries have gone up so much, especially at the major retail stores,” said Kristen Warren, a regular shopper at the Iredell Coast Community Bank.

Despite the closure of the food pantry, Iredell Coast will continue to support the community by providing free clothing and discounted household essentials. Current clients with unused outreach vouchers can still use them for free food until the shelves are empty.

The transition reflects the broader impact of inflation on community services, as organizations like Iredell Coast adapt to financial pressures while striving to support those in need. “We’re glad we’re at least able to continue providing,” McCrary added.
