Lagoona Bay’s future won’t be decided until after November election

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — The future of Lagoona Bay won’t be decided until after the election.

Over the weekend, the developer of the project posted in the Huntersville Politics Facebook group that he will ask the town board to delay a public hearing to December. He said he wants the focus to be on electing the best people for the community.

The developer also said a backup plan, if the project is rejected, would be 350 larger lot homes along with the beach club.

After the Huntersville Planning Board voted against the Lagoona Bay rezoning request, the developers announced changes earlier this month to the proposed beach-style resort. They’re ditching plans for a hotel and convention center, as well as retail space. The lagoon and 692 housing units would remain.

The new version of the project is being called Waterside. Waterside will feature “Waterside Village” a mixed use village of retail/restaurants, gathering with condos above. It will also feature the Lagoona Bay Beach Club, a members-only lifestyle club featuring an 8-acre crystal lagoon.

The project is still 263 acres and located on both sides of Sam Furr Road. The north section of the project will have 90 single family detached cottage homes replacing the 200 townhomes. The apartments have been reduced to three stories and 300 luxury units -- down from 320 units with some four-story buildings.

The south section will still feature the Lagoona Bay Beach club, with the lagoon reduced to 8 acres from 10.
