Man arrested for pointing gun during road rage incident in Rock Hill, police say

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A man was arrested Tuesday after pointing a gun at another person during a road rage incident near Main Street in Rock Hill, according to the Rock Hill Police Department.

At around 9:50 a.m., police said they responded to a gas station in the 400 block of Herlong Avenue after a caller said a gun was pointed at him.

According to the victim, the confrontation happened after he honked at a gray Honda that was stopped at a green traffic light in the left turn lane of Cherry Road.

The driver of the Honda went through the light, then waited for the victim to catch up.

At the intersection of Heckle Boulevard and Main Street, the suspect got out of his car, walked in front of the victim’s car and began yelling. He then pulled a pistol out and pointed it at the driver, the victim told authorities.

On arrival, officers identified Derrick Long, 19, of Rock Hill, as the driver of the Honda.

Long told police he was sitting at the traffic light on his phone when the man honked at him. He said the horn made him angry and he jumped out of his car to yell and point at the man, officers said.

Long denied pointing a firearm at the victim, but he did have a Taurus 709 Slim pistol on his passenger seat, according to police.

Rock Hill police arrested Long for pointing and presenting a firearm, as well as for unlawfully carrying a firearm.
