Man killed on I-85 in China Grove following dispute on highway shoulder

CHINA GROVE, N.C. — A man was hit and killed Tuesday night on Interstate 85 North in China Grove, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say it happened just before 11:30 p.m. north of Highway 152.

Investigators said the victim and another person were traveling together when their vehicle ran out of gas on the highway shoulder. Deputies believe the pair got into a fight before the victim was struck by a passing vehicle.

Authorities have not identified the victim.

Then around 3:30 a.m., a China Grove fire truck was struck by a different car while responding to the scene. One person was taken to the hospital from that crash.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the man’s death.

It’s not clear if anyone will face charges.
