Matthews dealing with cleanup days after tornado, heavy rain hit area

MATTHEWS, N.C. — It’s been a little more than a week since powerful tornadoes ripped through Matthews, snapping trees in half and leaving a giant mess behind for neighbors to clean up.

Many people were affected by the storms earlier this month and there is still plenty of cleanup left to do.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said cleanup will begin this week.

Authorities said they received 93 calls specific to weather last week -- 36 came in for downed trees on powerlines, cars and homes.

“It’s sporadic. You’ll go a few blocks and see nothing, then you’ll see several big trees down in one area,” said a Matthews resident.
