Many gather in Uptown for MLK parade

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte is celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with free, family-friendly events designed to promote inclusiveness in the community Saturday and Sunday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students were recognized Thursday for art, essays and other work which pay tribute to King's role in the advancement of civil rights. 
 
Winners of the CMS Arts and Writing Contest were featured in the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade on Saturday, Jan. 16. 
 
The parade began in uptown Charlotte at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of North Tryon and 10th streets.

Mayor Jennifer Roberts said she hoped the parade inspired people to reflect on King’s push for equality.

“I hope there is some enthusiasm that we know people are coming together, because we are still working for equality we are still working to make sure there are no barriers to everyone being treated equally in our community,” Roberts said.
