New Census figures show just how much Charlotte has grown in past decade

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While the Charlotte region continues to grow at a rapid clip, Mecklenburg County cemented its place behind Wake County as the state’s second-largest county in terms of population, according to the new U.S. Census Bureau figures.

Wake County, with its 1,129,410 residents, had about 14,000 more residents than Mecklenburg County’s 1,115,482 denizens as of April 1, 2020, shows the Census data, released on Thursday. They were the only two counties in North Carolina to surpass 1 million residents. Ten years ago, in the 2010 Census, Mecklenburg County had 919,628 residents versus Wake’s 900,993 residents.

While Mecklenburg may trail Wake in number of residents, it still saw its population rise 21.3% over the past 10 years.

And the newest Census count puts the city of Charlotte’s population at 874,579 people, a nearly 20% increase from 731,424 residents in April 2010. That easily makes Charlotte the most populous city in North Carolina, followed by Raleigh at 467,665 residents and Greensboro at 299,035 people.
