NEWTON, N.C. — Newton leaders sent out a warning to residents after a skimmer was found at a bank ATM.
A resident discovered a card reader and remote camera system Sunday night attached to the ATM at the First Citizens Bank on College Avenue and A Street.
Skimming devices allow thieves to secretly swipe your credit and debit card information. The thieves may also place a small, undetectable camera nearby so that they can record you entering your PIN.
There are several ways to protect you and your money:
- Inspect the card slot. Even grab it and shake it a little. Be suspicious is it's crooked or loose.
- When you type your PIN, shield the screen with your other hand, so a camera can't see.
- Be especially cautious in tourist areas.
- Avoid outside ATMs when possible.
- Always keep an eye on your accounts.
