Donald Trump wins South Carolina primary

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Donald Trump won the South Carolina Republican primary.

South Carolina residents voted in the much anticipated South Carolina Republican primary Saturday.

Voters in the state have been inundated with phone calls, signs, television ads and Facebook posts in an effort to get voters to the polls.

It's no surprise how much campaigning has been done, said Karen Kedrowski, a political science professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences with Winthrop University.

South Carolina is critical for Republicans with only one exception, every winner of the state since 1980 has gone onto become the party's nominee.

She said the surprise is how dirty the campaign has become.

“Donald Trump threatening to sue Ted Cruz. Marco Rubio accusing Ted Cruz of not being able to speak Spanish,” she said, “And then, of course, we had the whole Pope-Trump spat.”

While Trump is expected to take Saturday’s win, this election may mean more for the other remaining candidates.

“In a lot of ways, we're looking at who is in a race for second and who is in a race for third,” Kedrowski said.

It appears that will be Cruz and Rubio but do not count Jeb Bush out just yet, she said.

“If he has a good day, he will get third and so the question is -- Rubio and Cruz -- who is going to be second, and then between Rubio or Cruz and Bush, who is going to be third?” Kedrowski said.

She expects voter turnout to be high for a primary between good weather, the interesting race and a Saturday election.
